On July 20, 1793, Scottish-Canadian explorer Alexander Mackenzie reached the Pacific coast of present-day British Columbia, completing the first recorded European overland crossing of North America north of Mexico — more than a decade before Lewis and Clark completed the equivalent journey in the United States. On July 20, 1871, British Columbia officially became the sixth province to join the Dominion of Canada, fulfilling a promise made by the federal government to build a transcontinental railway connecting the Pacific colony to the rest of the country.
